Patent infringement lawsuits continue to rise in Marshall, Tyler, and other courts in the Eastern District of Texas, hitting a record high during the first half of this year.
According to statistics collected by Dallas-based Androvett Legal Media & Marketing, 912 lawsuits have been filed by businesses and individuals in East Texas during the first six months of 2014, which is a 26% increase from 2013.
One factor in the increase in patent lawsuits in East Texas might be the changes made in the America Invents Act of 2011, which mandated that plaintiffs must now sue defendants individually instead of a dozen of them in a combined lawsuit.
In a study done by California-based legal data supplier Lex Machina, judges and juries in East Texas award huge monetary judgments in patent suits, and that the median damage award in the area has been in line with other jurisdictions since 2000.
